چکیده

Ethics can be an uncomfortable field when faced with astounding breakthroughs in scientific research that could change the face of medicine. The sequencing of the human genome in the Human Genome Project that started in 1990 was effectively completed at the turn of this millennium. Subsequent discoveries about many gene traits have substantively ensconced values discourse into the molecular landscape of the human condition. Closely related to the importance of gene discoveries was the achievement in 1998 of isolating and cultivating human embryonic stem cells (“hESCs”). The discovery of this technique occurred over twenty-five years ago in mice and over ten years ago in primates. These marvels raise complex ethical dilemmas for scientists who seek to develop a multitude of treatments and therapies for a plethora of diseases and debilities. Many examples of the high hopes for hESC research could be provided, such as hESCs possibly soon becoming a resource of hematopoietic cells whose transplantation today provides the most likely pathway to cure many diseases. This Article focuses upon a particularly complex debate around the ethical legitimacy of hESC research. The timeliness of this debate is manifested by the Executive Order of President Barack Obama on March 9, 2009 to permit federal funding for embryonic stem cell

A challenged choice: donating spare embryos to stem cell research in Switzerland.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS Couples undergoing IVF in Switzerland may have embryos in excess of their clinical need that they can donate to human embryonic stem cell research. Thus a new practice has emerged in Switzerland when IVF treatment and embryonic stem cell research come into contact. This interface needs to be investigated from an ethical-legal point of view to facilitate a fair informed choice...

P-59: Low IVF Rate and Embryonic Development in Ciprofloxacin-Treated Male Mice

Background: In the last few years, a marked decrease in male fertility has been reported. Environmental factors were recently suspected for this problem. The misuse of medicines especially antibiotics are among environmental factors that can affect reproductive system. Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic antibacterial agent belonging to the family of fluoroquinolones with a very broad spectrum effect ...

Establishment of human embryonic stem cell lines from frozen-thawed blastocysts using STO cell feeder layers.

BACKGROUND Recently, human embryonic stem (hES) cells have become very important resources for basic research on cell replacement therapy and other medical applications. The purpose of this study was to test whether pluripotent hES cell lines could be successfully derived from frozen-thawed embryos that were destined to be discarded after 5 years in a routine human IVF-embryo transfer programme...

Stem cell research and transplantation: science leading ethics.

One of the most exciting developments in the biological sciences in the past decade has been the discovery and characterization of human embryonic stem cells (ESCs). The interest to transplanters is the potential applications of stem cells in regenerative medicine (RM), which may involve tissue engineering, genetic engineering, and other techniques to repair, replace, or regenerate failing tiss...

Improvement in the blastocyst quality and efficiency of putative embryonic stem cell line derivation from porcine embryos produced in vitro using a novel culturing system.

Porcine embryonic stem cells (pESCs) have great potential for application in translational biomedical research, including xenotransplantation and disease models. Obtaining high-quality blastocysts is the most important factor in the isolation and colonization of primary ESCs and the establishment of ESC lines. In pigs, in vitro-derived blastocysts have a limited cell number compared to in vivo-...
